Speaker Information

Bridget Uzar is available for orchid societies both in person and via Zoom.

Read on for more information about booking her for your society or club.

My name is Bridget Uzar and I have been working for C&H since 2002.  I have been in charge of the breeding collection and other greenhouses for most of that time and it has also been my responsibility to handle the majority of the hybridizing since 2009.  You will find me on our social media, compiling our regular email offerings as well as giving talks during our open houses and to tour groups. I visit societies for talks both local and on the road plus travel to orchid shows/symposiums.

The following PowerPoint presentations are available:

Topic #1 Journey of a Seedpod, which is a presentation that takes you from why and how you create an orchid seedpod, all the way through growing seedlings in the greenhouse.  Included are photos and videos of the lab and greenhouse steps.

Topic #2 Troubleshooting Your Orchid, and it includes common issues like plants not flowering, overgrown or dehydrated plants, insects, diseases and virus.  This is especially useful in identifying insect and pathogens that might infect your collection.  Crowd favorite

Topic #3 Introduction to Tropical Ladyslippers.  We discuss the entire ladyslipper alliance in general and then focus on Paphs and Phrags.  Different types of hybrids and species, growing suggestions, media, etc.  This is geared towards growers that are new to orchids, or the ladyslipper alliance and want to know the basics to start with.

Topic #4 For those interested in what Carter and Holmes Orchids breeding focus areas are there is What’s Up and Growing.  This is a current and coming attractions presentation about our breeding lines.  Discussion about parent stock attributes and interesting hybrids in the works, with a focus on Cattleya alliance.

Topic #5 For Beginner Societies or Clubs just getting started how about Orchids and Their Companion Plants. Learn why orchids are unique, plus the best way to care for them in your home.  As a bonus, learn which houseplants do the best right alongside them!

Topic #6 Orchid Mythbusters- The Truth Behind the Tales. For as many years as hobbyists have been collecting orchids, there have been myths regarding them. We will explore many common (and uncommon) misconceptions about growing and propagating orchids.  In the digital age, we rely too much on simply what we read online which can lead to poor growing choices.

More topics in the works!

If I am allowed to bring pre-orders as well as plants for sale, I do not require an honorarium/speaker’s fee.  I only ask for mileage reimbursement (based on the current Federal Mileage Rate), and hotel accommodations near the venue if staying overnight.  I only visit societies within driving distance.  For distances further than 4 hours away, I would prefer to combine multiple societies in one trip.

For pre-orders.  Carter and Holmes would provide a promo code that members can use when shopping online.  It would apply a 15% discount on all regularly priced plant purchases.  We would take a few weeks to gather as many society orders as possible, and then they would be brought to the meeting at no additional charge.  Special requests can be emailed directly to Bridget.

I usually bring an assortment of material for members to shop from.  Our specialty is Cattleya alliance and many offerings are healthy, seedling sized hybrids.  Included are items both on and off our online store, as well as new introductions and limited edition plants.

I also offer Zoom presentations for the programs above.  My charge for Zoom classes is $100 and I am available most weekends/evenings.  We can arrange for pre-orders to be shipped, or an assortment of plants can be sent ahead of the meeting.

Please email me directly at bridget@carterandholmes.com with any questions.
